Polyamide 11 & 12- A high potential material for healthcare, aerospace & defence and others

The PA11 and PA12 market in 3D printing is forecasted based on two scenarios as its growth is primarily dependent on the adoption of 3D printing technology by end-use industries. Scenario one represents comparatively normal growth whereas scenario two projects exponential growth.
The PA11 and PA12 market in 3D printing is projected to reach USD 48.6 million by 2020, at a CAGR of 26.59% from 2015 to 2020, by scenario one and USD 85.1 million by 2020, at a CAGR of 41.2% from 2015 to 2020, by scenario two. The growth of the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for 3D printing applications from the end-user market for customized products.
The key industries using PA11 and PA12 in 3D printing include healthcare, aerospace & defense, consumers, and others. Aerospace & defense industry demands precision for the design of customized parts to meet the requirements. Healthcare is another key sector where some grades of PA11 and PA12 have been used for medical applications such as prosthetics.
The recent developments by companies such as Airbus and NASA, where they have used 3D printing for manufacturing of specialized parts, signify the increasing importance of 3D printing technology. Automotive segment is a promising sector for PA11 and PA12 with increasing demand for customized vehicles. Several luxury car manufacturers in Europe and North America are using PA11 and PA12 for 3D printing for manufacturing customized parts. The growth of PA11 and PA12 in automotive sector is the key contributor for scenario two numbers. PA11 and PA12 also prove to be a perfect thermoplastic for laser sintering technology over others such as polylactic acid (PLA) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), which are yet to be developed as laser sintering materials.
The key grades of PA11 and PA12 that are used in laser sintering include glass filled, fire resistant, impact resistant, alumide, and many others. PA12 contributed the largest share to the PA11 and PA12 in 3D printing market owing to the presence of a large number of suppliers and an established distribution network with large number of grades available. PA11, which was developed by Arkema SA, is a bio–based polyamide and is emerging as 3D printing material. With increase in availability, PA11 is expected to register high growth between 2015 and 2020. PA12 is primarily petroleum–based; however, its bio-based version can be developed from palm oil. Key suppliers of bio-based and specialty grades of PA11 and PA12 as raw materials include Arkema SA, Evonik AG, Invista S.a.r.l, and others.
Germany, France, and Italy are the major PA 11 and PA12 markets in the European region for 3D printing, whereas the U.S. and Canada are the key countries in the North American PA11 and PA12 market. Asia-Pacific is the future potential market for PA11 and PA12 with several components manufacturers operational in the region. Furthermore, the presence of major emerging economies has made this region a favorable market for PA11 and PA12 in 3D printing. Companies such as EOS GmbH, Arkema SA, 3D systems, Stratasys, and Evonik AG have expanded in Asia-Pacific with a strategic vision to cater the end-user industries across the region. Other key players operational in Asia-Pacific include Golden Plastics and others.
