APAC is the key region in Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether Market

Global methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) market is projected to reach USD 18.99 Billion by 2022, at a CAGR of 4.8%. The use of MTBE as oxygenate is rising rapidly in Asian and Middle Eastern & African countries due to environmental restrictions to curb air pollution.

Major applications in the MTBE market are gasoline and others. Others include high purity isobutene and medical intermediates. Gasoline is the largest application of MTBE, in terms of value. MTBE has been used in gasoline since 1979 due to environmental and health concerns. The use of MTBE as gasoline additive mainly started with the replacement of metallic additives, such as lead and Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl (MMT). The significant volume of MTBE consumption in gasoline is driving the demand for MTBE in the gasoline application. Rapidly increasing vehicle fleets especially in emerging economies and increasing urbanization is driving the demand for MTBE in the gasoline segment.

This can be attributed to the high demand for gasoline from APAC, Middle East & Africa, and Latin American countries such as China, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico. The MTBE market has witnessed several changes in the past few decades. The use of MTBE as oxygenate has been completely banned in the US after 2006 due to the contamination of groundwater. MTBE, as oxygenate, is being replaced by Ethanol and ETBE in Japan, Brazil, and some Western European countries due to certain environmental and legal regulations. The CAGR of other applications of MTBE, such as high purity isobutene and medical intermediates is increasing at rates well above global GDP.

Rapid economic expansion and increase in foreign direct investment in countries, such as China and South Korea, the MTBE market is expected to grow significantly during the next five years. Most of the countries in the APAC region are emerging and cannot afford costly oxygenates, such as Ethanol and ETBE, due to which there are no restrictions on blending MTBE with gasoline in the region. Some of the world’s largest MTBE producers, such as Sinopec (China), China National Petroleum Corporation (China), and Petronas (Malaysia) are headquartered in the APAC region. China is the largest consumer of MTBE and also has the highest production capacity in the world.

Major companies offering MTBE are majorly involved in expansions and acquisitions to strengthen their positions in the MTBE market. These market players have adopted expansions as their major strategy to expand their global reach. Some companies concentrated more on the agreements and joint ventures strategy.
Prominent players majorly adopted the expansions strategy to enhance their customer network in the MTBE market. For instance, in July 2015, Evonik Industries (Germany) expanded its C-4 output at Antwerp and Marl (Germany) to increase the output of MTBE. This helped the company to improve its market position and support its plans for an increase in customers. In July 2016, Eni S.p.A (Italy) expanded its MTBE production plant in Ravenna for a 50% capacity expansion during maintenance in August. The Ravenna site on the Adriatic coast, between Venice and San Marino, can produce either Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) or Ethyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (ETBE) and is currently geared to manufacture the former. The plant has a capacity of 140,000 tons, and a 50% increase would lift this to around 210,000 tons. This is expected to help the company meet the increased demand for MTBE.
Major MTBE producers are SABIC (Saudi Arabia), Evonik Industries (Germany), CNPC (China), Huntsman (US), Eni (Italy), Sinopec (China), LyondellBasell (Netherlands), Shell (Netherlands), ENOC (UAE), and Qafac (Qatar). SABIC (Saudi Arabia) and LyondellBasell (Netherlands) are the most active players in the MTBE market. These companies adopted various strategies to enhance their market shares in the global MTBE market between 2017 and 2022.
SABIC (Saudi Arabia) develops, manufactures, sells, and markets MTBE for gasoline blending, and is the largest MTBE producer in the world. The company has adopted acquisitions as a major growth strategy to enhance its regional presence. For instance, SABIC entered into an agreement with Shell for a 50% stake in its Sadaf Chemicals. This acquisition is expected to cater to the interests of both the companies in the future and further optimize operations at Sadaf.
LyondellBasell (Netherlands) manufactures, sells, and markets MTBE for gasoline blending. It is one of the major players that have established a strong foothold in the MTBE market and is the second-largest MTBE producer in the world. The company is focused on expansions as its key growth strategy to meet the growing demand from customers. In 2017, the company announced its decision to build the world’s largest Propylene Oxide (PO) and Tertiary Butyl Alcohol (TBA) plant in the Houston area. The project is estimated to cost approximately USD 2.4 billion. TBA will be converted to two ether-based oxyfuels, MTBE and ETBE.

Growing Demand From APAC Countries- Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether Market

The Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) market is projected to reach USD 18.99 billion by 2022 from USD 14.99 billion in 2017, at a CAGR of 4.8% from 2017 to 2022. Major factors fueling the growth of the MTBE market are the growing demand from the gasoline application, increasing demand for the MTBE oxygenate from the APAC region, and stringent environmental regulations in emerging economies.
APAC is the largest market for Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE), in terms of volume, and this trend is expected to continue till 2022. Key countries in the region, such as China, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Indonesia, among others are witnessing a gradual increase in the use of MTBE in gasoline blending. The growth of the MTBE market can be attributed to the rising demand for reformulated gasoline as it enables reduction in the harmful emissions of carbon. China leads the MTBE market in the APAC, accounting for more than half of the demand for MTBE in the region. Increasing car ownership and the establishment of many new MTBE plants due to growing domestic consumption are driving the demand for MTBE in the country.
Based on manufacturing process, the fluid liquid cracker segment is expected to lead the MTBE market, as this process is preferred by most MTBE producers and is used in all regions. The fluid liquid cracker process is similar to the steam cracker process, with the only difference being that isobutene is extracted from FCC overheads. In this process, capacity is determined by the feed availability. Usually, plants produce in the range of 20,000-70,000 tons per annum. This process is widely used as it is the simplest and the most feasible.
Based on application, the gasoline segment of the MTBE market is projected to grow at the highest rate during the forecast period. MTBE is extensively used as a gasoline additive to increase the octane rating of the fuel. When used in gasoline engines, it reduces the knocking effect that leads to inefficient burning and engine damage. The use of MTBE as a gasoline additive mainly started with the replacement of metallic additives, such as lead and Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl (MMT). The cleaner fuel legislations in the Asian and Middle Eastern and African countries are driving the use of MTBE in gasoline.
