TIGG LLC (US) and Puragen Activated Carbons (US) are leading players in Activated Carbon Filters Market
The global activated carbon filters market size is estimated at USD 267 Million in 2020 and is projected to reach USD 330 Million by 2025, at a CAGR of 4.4%, between 2020 and 2025. Activated carbon filters are used to remove organic compounds, and free chlorine from water to make it suitable for drinking and reuse in manufacturing processes or to discharge in water bodies. They are used to remove organic elements, such as humic acid and fulvic acid from potable water to prevent the formation of trihalomethanes, a class of carcinogens. They are also used for air/gas filtration in various industries. The filter media, which is used in the filtration process is activated carbon, also known as activated charcoal. Activated carbon is a form of carbon that removes organic compounds from liquids and gases by a process known as “adsorption”. It is extremely porous and thus has a very large surface area available for adsorption.
APAC is estimated to be the largest market for activated carbon filters in 2019. The market for this region is segmented into China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Rest of APAC. According to the World Bank, APAC is the fastest-growing region in terms of both population and economy. The region has witnessed significant growth in the past decade, accounting for over one-third of the world’s GDP. High economic growth, coupled with the increasing population, is expected to drive the region’s industrial sector. This is expected to increase the demand for activated carbon filters in water pollution treatment and water purification applications.
The key players in the activated carbon filters market are TIGG LLC (US), Puragen Activated Carbons (US), Cabot corporation (US), Westech Engineering (US), Kuraray Co. Ltd. (Japan), Lenntech B.V. (The Netherlands), Donau Carbon Gmbh (Germany), General Carbon Corporation (US), Sereco SR.L. (Italy), Carbtrol Corp (US). The activated carbon filters market report analyzes the key growth strategies adopted by the leading market players, between 2016 and 2019, which include expansions, new product developments, and collaborations.

The Dow Chemical Company (US) is focused on partnerships to meet the growing demand in the market. In October 2019, the Dow and Evonik entered into an exclusive technology partnership. They are plan to bring a unique method (HYPROSYN) for directly synthesizing propylene glycol from propylene and hydrogen peroxide. Over 100 Evonik employees worked for years to develop this method. The key element is a novel catalytic system developed by Evonik researchers, which allows direct synthesis of propylene glycol from propylene and hydrogen peroxide in a process offering high yield and comparatively low energy consumption.
LyondellBasell Industries N.V. (Netherlands) focuses on expansion to strengthen its market position in the propylene glycol market. In August 2018, the company announced to build the world’s largest propylene oxide (PO) and tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) plant. The $2.4-B project represents the single-largest capital investment in the company’s history. The plant will start in 2021; the facility will be able to produce 470,000 tpy of PO and 1 MMtpy of TBA per anum.
Archer Daniels Midland Co. (US) is focused on partnerships to meet the growing demand for propylene glycol. In January 2018, the company and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) entered into a partnership to produce bio-based propylene glycol. As a result of the collaborative research between PNNL and ADM, the company now has a full-scale production facility at its manufacturing plant in Decatur, Illinois. The facility employs 140 people and can produce 100,000 metric tons of propylene glycol from renewable sources per year. ADM uses or sells this bio-based product for use in deicers, cosmetics, pet food, and pharmaceuticals, among others.

The MCA market is expected to witness high growth in emerging economies, such as China, India, and Indonesia. Factors such as increasing disposable income and changing lifestyles of the middle-class population in these countries are expected to fuel the demand for personal care products, textiles, detergents, crop protection chemicals, and medicines. The growth of these industries propels the consumption of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), which consequently drives the demand for MCA in the aforementioned economies. Additionally, the growth of the building & construction industry drives the consumption of CMC and thioglycolic acid (TGA), which, in turn, drives the demand for MCA in the Asia Pacific region.
Based on product form, the liquid segment is projected to register the highest growth rate. The high growth in the use of liquid MCA is due to its easy miscibility as an intermediate, and efficient operation. Increased R&D activities to develop new and innovative products for use across a wide range of application areas are expected to boost the growth of the MCA market during the forecast period.
The surfactants segment is projected to be the fastest-growing application segment between 2017 and 2022. Surfactant-based face wash, gel, and hair cream, among other personal care products, are replacing conventional products, owing to their cleansing ability, ease of usage, and customization. The increasing use of MCA in the manufacturing of amphoteric surfactants, such as betaines and imidazolines, is expected to boost the surfactant market during the forecast period. Increasing adoption of surfactants in the cosmetic industry in developing countries, such as India, China, Indonesia, and Brazil, is expected to drive the demand for MCA in this application. Increasing disposable income and changing lifestyles of consumers are key growth drivers for the surfactants market in emerging countries.
